I have been vegetarian for most of my life. I have eaten meat on the odd occasion, but I never really liked it. Thank goodness I have a husband who loves his meat, as whenever we went out for dinner and there was meat served, I’d put it on his plate! I wanted to become vegan for some time as I never liked eggs and didn’t like the thought of drinking milk as most milk contains hormones which are used to escalate milk production. I knew that this was something I did not want in my system.

 

As they say, old habits die hard and it took quite a long time to transition from vegetarian to fully vegan, until I realized that for most of the time, I was trying to please other people rather than myself. It was embarrassing when we went out for supper and I couldn’t eat anything that was on the table especially when we went out for a seafood braai and there wasn’t even a salad.

 

However, I think it was seeing my friend Melanie Hawken transform into a slimmer, trimmer and fitter version of herself, when she became vegan, that helped me turn the corner.  

 

It took a while for me to make the transition as I really missed yoghurt, cream cheese, cheesecake and cheese.  I used to put cheese on top of everything, so not being able to do that took a while to get used to. I thought if I was going to go vegan, I was not going to go the route of eating vegan cheese, vegan butter etc. However, I have loosened up a bit and as you will see in this book that we have vegan butter, vegan cheese and even vegan mozzarella because I love a caprese salad which is one of my favorites and I missed having that, so where there’s a will there’s a way!

 

I must say that just consuming a plant based diet has made a huge difference to my health. I feel so much fitter and seem to have more energy than some people half my age.

 

The weight didn’t fall off me, probably because I eat a lot of the wrong things. However, I still feel healthier and have never had a sick day off work. So from a health point of view, I think it’s definitely the way to go.

 

It’s not an easy route.  It takes a lot of discipline and courage and preparation. However, this book will show you that you don’t have to eat boring food if you’re a vegan. There are a lot of fantastic things that you can eat that are really good for you. Meals are quick and easy to prepare.

 

Your grocery bill will be much lighter and you will feel so much better too!
